Hydraulic Swim Ladder

Access

Getting back on board after a swim should be effortless — not a struggle against a slippery transom. The Hydraulic Swim Ladder from H+B technics solves this with a retractable staircase that deploys and stows at the touch of a button. When extended, it provides safe, comfortable access from the water to the swim platform with three to five individually configured steps. When retracted, the entire mechanism folds beneath the platform into a stainless steel cassette and disappears from view.

What remains is an unobstructed swim platform. No protruding hardware, no dirt traps, no compromise on the stern aesthetic the naval architect intended. The system is hydraulically operated — a single button press extends the ladder into the water and retracts it after use. The synchronised cylinder movement ensures all steps deploy evenly and lock into position. Each unit is individually engineered for the specific platform geometry, manufactured from electropolished AISI 316L stainless steel at our facility in Münster, and delivered fully pre-assembled and function-tested.

HYDRAULIC ONE-BUTTON OPERATION

Smooth deployment, zero manual effort.

Traditional yacht swim ladders require manual deployment — pulling, securing, and stowing hardware that crew or guests often prefer to avoid entirely. The Hydraulic Swim Ladder eliminates this. A single button press extends the full staircase into the water and retracts it after use. The dedicated hydraulic cylinder synchronises all steps during deployment, ensuring smooth, controlled movement without jerking or unevenness.

This matters most in practice: older guests, children, or anyone reboarding after a swim can rely on a stable, fully extended staircase without waiting for crew assistance. Compared to fixed platform ladders that require climbing strength and grip, the hydraulic swim ladder provides genuine step-by-step access from the waterline to the platform level — closer to a staircase than a ladder.

FULLY RETRACTABLE — ZERO DECK FOOTPRINT

Invisible when stowed, the platform stays clear.

What distinguishes this swim ladder from conventional boarding ladders is its fully retractable design. When stowed, the entire mechanism — steps, arms, and hinges — folds beneath the swim platform into a precision-fitted stainless steel cassette. No visible steps, no protruding hardware, no obstruction to the platform surface.

This is a critical requirement on superyachts and charter vessels, where the stern aesthetic defines the guest experience. Fixed ladders or surface-mounted alternatives permanently occupy deck space and create visual clutter. The Hydraulic Swim Ladder leaves nothing behind when retracted — the platform surface is fully walkable and visually uninterrupted.

INDIVIDUALLY CONFIGURED

Engineered for your specific vessel.

No two swim platforms are the same. They differ in depth, angle, structural clearance, hydraulic line routing, and the height above the waterline. That is why every Hydraulic Swim Ladder from H+B technics is individually designed and manufactured. Our engineering team works directly with the shipyard or owner, using platform drawings to define the exact step count, arm geometry, cassette dimensions, and deployment angle for each vessel.

The width and length of the ladder arms can be adjusted to suit individual vessel dimensions. The arms are manufactured from electropolished stainless steel for long-term corrosion resistance in permanent saltwater exposure. This level of customisation ensures that the swim ladder integrates precisely into the platform structure — not as an off-the-shelf component adapted after the fact, but as a purpose-built system designed for the specific vessel.

Technical Specifications

This system provides hydraulic water access from the swim platform with a fully retractable ladder. Single-button operation deploys and stows the complete staircase in one cycle.

MATERIAL

Ladder arms and all primary structural components: AISI 316L stainless steel (1.4404), electropolished. Minimum 2% molybdenum content for pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride-rich marine environments. Electropolishing removes surface micro-inclusions from fabrication, densifies the passive chromium-oxide layer, and reduces surface roughness to limit salt crystal adhesion and fouling. Grip surfaces retain traction when wet. Designed for permanent saltwater exposure without surface degradation.

STEP CONFIGURATION

3 to 5 steps, individually configured per vessel. Step count determined by platform height above waterline, desired entry depth, and structural clearance beneath the platform. Step width and tread depth defined during engineering phase. Each step is individually fixed and load-rated for safe reboarding under dynamic conditions.

OPERATION

Hydraulic, single-button control. Dedicated hydraulic cylinder synchronises all steps during deployment and retraction, ensuring even, controlled movement across the full stroke. Connected to vessel hydraulic system or dedicated compact power unit. Available in 12V or 24V to match onboard electrical system. Electro-switching box and complete wiring harness supplied plug-ready.

STEP TREADS

Teak wood treads on all steps. Teak provides natural grip when wet, resists saltwater exposure, and integrates visually with the deck aesthetic of the vessel. Tread dimensions configured per step width. Alternative tread materials available on request.

DELIVERY

Fully pre-assembled and function-tested at H+B technics, Münster, Germany. Hydraulic lines filled and pressure-tested. Wiring harness plug-ready for connection to vessel electrical system. Detailed installation guide with photographs, technical drawings, and spare parts list included. Ready for direct installation on board without on-site assembly work.

"The lifts are not just functional — they match our design and standards. With H+B, it feels more like a team than a supplier relationship."

Frequently asked questions

Answers to the most common questions about the Hydraulic Swim Ladder.

How many steps can the ladder have?

The Hydraulic Swim Ladder is available with three to five steps. The number is configured based on the platform height above the waterline, the desired entry depth, and the structural clearance beneath the platform. Our engineering team recommends the optimal configuration during the design phase.

What is the difference between the Hydraulic Swim Ladder and the Mechanical Swim Ladder?

The Hydraulic Swim Ladder deploys and retracts at the push of a button via a dedicated hydraulic cylinder. The Mechanical Swim Ladder operates automatically through its mechanical linkage with the swim platform — as the platform descends, the ladder extends. The hydraulic variant offers independent deployment, does not depend on platform movement, and suits installations where the swim ladder needs to operate separately from the platform.

Can the ladder be retrofitted to an existing vessel?

Yes, provided the swim platform has sufficient structural depth to accommodate the retractable cassette. Our engineering team assesses feasibility based on platform drawings or an on-site survey. Retrofit projects are coordinated directly with the owner or service yard. The system ships fully pre-assembled and plug-ready.

What step tread material is used?

Steps are fitted with teak wood treads as standard. Teak is used for its natural grip when wet, its resistance to saltwater and UV exposure, and its visual compatibility with yacht deck finishes. Alternative tread materials can be specified during the configuration phase.

How long does delivery take from order to installation?

Lead time depends on the complexity of the platform integration and the current production schedule. Typical projects run 6–10 weeks from confirmed order to delivery. Because each system is engineered individually, we begin with a detailed alignment on the platform geometry before production starts.
