Mechanical Swimming Ladder
Getting into the water from a superyacht swim platform should require no crew, no button, and no thought. A ladder that needs to be manually deployed, or one that depends on a separate electrical system to extend and retract, adds friction to an experience that should be frictionless.
The H+B technics Mechanical Swimming Ladder eliminates that friction. It is mechanically synchronised to the movement of the swim platform itself: when the platform lowers, the ladder deploys. When the platform rises, the ladder retracts. No additional switch, no separate motor, no manual intervention. One movement does both.
The ladder deploys when the platform lowers — no separate input required.
The Mechanical Swimming Ladder is coupled directly to the kinematic system of the swim platform. As the platform descends, the mechanical linkage translates that movement into the controlled extension of the ladder. The ladder reaches its fully deployed position at the same moment the platform reaches its lowered position. The two movements are locked in synchronisation by the mechanical coupling — not by software, not by a timer, not by a second control input.
Because the deployment is purely mechanical, the ladder is always in the correct position relative to the platform. There is no calibration required after installation, no synchronisation that can drift over time, and no failure mode in which the platform is down but the ladder has not extended. The ladder follows the platform. Always.
When the platform rises, the mechanical coupling drives the ladder back into the retracted position. The transition between deployed and retracted is smooth, continuous, and requires no crew involvement at any point.
No motor, no sensor, no control system — the ladder works because mechanics work.
The ladder mechanism contains no electrical components. Extension and retraction are driven entirely by the mechanical forces transmitted through the platform linkage. This removes an entire category of potential failure: there are no motor burnouts, no sensor faults, no control board failures, and no wiring that degrades in the marine environment.
For a component that is used every time someone enters or exits the water, reliability is not optional. The purely mechanical design means that the ladder functions in exactly the same way on day one and on year ten. There is no maintenance schedule for electrical components because there are no electrical components. The mechanical linkage is inspected as part of the platform service — no separate ladder service schedule is required.
The absence of electrical dependency also means the ladder cannot be accidentally left in an incorrect position due to a control system fault. If the platform is lowered, the ladder is deployed. If the platform is raised, the ladder is retracted. The mechanical coupling enforces this — unconditionally.
When retracted, the ladder disappears into the platform.
The ladder is designed to integrate flush with the swim platform surface when in the retracted position. The tread profiles sit within the platform structure, and the frame does not protrude above or below the platform surface. From the deck above, the retracted ladder is not visible as a separate element — the platform reads as a clean, uninterrupted surface.
This integration is not a cosmetic detail. A ladder that protrudes when retracted creates a trip hazard on the platform surface, a visual interruption in a design context where continuity matters, and additional drag when the platform is raised out of the water. The flush retracted position avoids all three.
The tread material and surface finish are specified during the engineering phase to match the platform finish — typically teak or composite decking. The result is a ladder that is completely functional when deployed and completely absent when not needed.
Technical Specifications
The Mechanical Swimming Ladder is custom-integrated with the swim platform system. All components are manufactured from electropolished AISI 316L stainless steel. Tread material and finish are specified to match the platform surface.
DEPLOYMENT MECHANISM
Purely mechanical. Coupled directly to the platform kinematic system. Ladder deploys and retracts in synchronisation with platform movement. No separate actuator, no electrical input.
RETRACTED POSITION
Flush with platform surface. No protrusion above or below deck level when retracted. Tread profiles sit within platform structure.
TREAD MATERIAL
Specified per installation. Options include teak, composite decking, or brushed stainless steel to match platform surface finish.
MATERIAL
Electropolished AISI 316L stainless steel for all structural components. Frame, linkage arms, and tread brackets from the same alloy.
MAINTENANCE
No electrical components — no separate ladder service schedule required. Mechanical linkage inspected as part of platform service interval.
"The lifts are not just functional — they match our design and standards. With H+B, it feels more like a team than a supplier relationship."
Frequently asked questions
Answers to the most common questions about the Mechanical Swimming Ladder.
It doesn't — there is no sensor or logic involved. The ladder is mechanically coupled to the platform movement. When the platform goes down, the linkage geometry drives the ladder out. When the platform goes up, the linkage drives the ladder back in. The synchronisation is a property of the mechanical design, not of a control system.
In many cases yes. The retrofit feasibility depends on the kinematic system of the existing platform and whether there is sufficient structural space within the platform to house the retracted ladder. H+B technics assesses the existing platform drawings and confirms compatibility during the engineering phase before any fabrication begins.
The tread material is specified during the engineering phase to match the swim platform surface. Typical options include teak, composite decking materials, and brushed stainless steel. The goal is a retracted ladder that reads as part of the platform surface, not as a separate element.
The ladder contains no electrical components and therefore has no electrical maintenance requirements. The mechanical linkage is inspected during the regular platform service interval. There is no separate service schedule for the ladder itself.
The load rating is specified during the engineering phase based on the installation requirements. The structural frame and tread brackets are sized accordingly. H+B technics provides load calculations as part of the engineering documentation delivered with the system.
